Children from Carson, CA (Catskill Avenue and Dominguez Elementary Schools) always brim with excitement as they eagerly select their new books to take home. Watson Land Company’s Matthew Means, Vice President of Asset Management and Bob Smith, Director of Asset Management, introduced this program in 2008, and Trini Jimenez, the current Vice President of Public Affairs, has kept the momentum moving by again adopting these twoschools and looks forward to attending more book giveaway events as opportunities become available.
Through the Books in Homes USA program and Watson Land Company’s sponsorship this year, Catskill and Dominguez schools received 3,724 brand-new books. Elementary school-age children get to choose among hundreds of titles to own as part of their own personal library—at no cost to them. Watson Land Company team members love to engage children at Books in Homes USA events as they flip through the book’s crisp pages and delight in their colorful pictures. Their smiles warm our hearts—a gentle reminder that any small act can have a significant impact. We are so blessed to have the opportunity to not only financially support Books in Homes USA’s very worthwhile program and to shake hands with the quiet heroes behind this life-changing organization. Books in Homes USA transforms the trajectories of children and families living in under-resourced communities in literacy and beyond by providing crucial new, diverse books of choice, inspiring a passion for reading, and establishing a foundation for lifelong success. Books in Homes USA’s vision is to “end booklessness” and for all children to have their own home libraries with books they love. Books can spark discovery, imagination, and even help children travel to new places around the world right from their homes. Recipients across the country are from schools, childhood development centers, shelters, hospitals, community centers, and more. Since its founding, Books in Homes USA has donated nearly 900,000 books to over 362,000 children in need. These young champions face disparity and adult burdens every day but overcome these hurdles through reading. Literacy provides tools for learning healthy eating habits, respecting the environment and our neighbors, to just uncovering fun found on the pages of a book. 100% of donations go into the program.
From youth programs to families in crisis, to senior services, to workforce development and literacy programs, Watson Land Company is proud to be a part of the Carson, Los Angeles County, Chino, and Inland Empire communities and looks forward to continuing its tradition of working in partnership to enhance everyone’s quality of life for many years to come.
